During
the past ten years I have gained a lot of experience dealing with injured
birds. Nevertheless I am a teacher and not a veterinary surgeon. In
severe cases my best friend Dr. Franz Appel has always helped with patience
and his veterinary advice. Some
birds had to be taken to the Veterinary University of Vienna for treatment
or euthanized.

of rehabilitation
All
new patients must undergo a close inspection. I try to make it as comfortable
for them as possible - they need it warm and calm to relax. Then I or
Dr. Appel and I together decide what is to be done. Sometimes I also
phone Dr. Frey for his opinion. He really is the raptor specialist.
I never keep any birds that need professional treatment but I offer
the vets around Schrems the possibility of keeping an injured bird in
one of my aviaries (should one be vacant). Sometimes veterinarians ring
me up to have a look before they euthanize birds.
